  • The paper bottle and cap is in production and can be ordered, with retail goods using it as soon as Q1 2025.
  • An Absolute Group praises the news as "an important milestone in sustainable packaging."

Paper packaging company Paboco continues its goal of “repacking the planet,” with what it reports to be the first-ever available combination of paper bottles & fiber-based caps. The company developed it in partnership with Blue Ocean Closures.

“We have already kicked off production and expect to see these bottles in consumers' hands by early 2025,” says Michael Michelsen, Paboco’s commercial director, indicating that the concept is a here-now reality. says Ola Tönnberg, chief commercial officer for BlueOcean Closures, adds: “We see that the fiber-based closure is a new standard category, applicable to a range of different bottle materials.”

The entire package, including cap, has a total weight of less than 16 grams. The cap has an HDPE barrier weighing less than 2 grams. With the bottle’s thin barrier, the combined package is recyclable as paper packaging.

Paboco sees this development as a continuation of its “journey of introducing paper bottles at scale by the end of 2025 and developing for future bio-based solutions.” The company will apply what it learns from the technical and design learnings, and the experience with paper bottles and caps in its Pioneer Community of early paper-bottle supporters whose members include P&G and L’oréal.

Another member, Absolut Group, has worked with Paboco and Blue Ocean and offers heady praise: ”We are proud to be part of both the Paboco and Blue Ocean Closures Pioneer Communities. This launch marks an important milestone in sustainable packaging, and we look forward to learning from it as we continue our cross-industry efforts to drive sustainable innovation and expand our packaging material portfolio,” says Elin Furelid, The Absolut Group's director of future of packaging.

The paper bottle and cap combination is available to order for selected partners.
