Specialty glass and glass ceramics technology developer Schott released its new polymer prefillable syringe, the ToPac SD, at Interphex 2015. It is designed to improve the safety and stability of sensitive drugs, according to a company press release.
“As more sensitive drugs enter the market, the need for high-quality, reliable packaging becomes increasingly important,” said Anil-Kumar Busimi, Head of Global Product Management Syringes Business, in a released statement. “Schott TopPac SD provides pharmaceutical manufacturers a trusted solution for their sensitive drugs and supports patient safety."
According to Schott, it conducted a specific component selection and processing method to provide a “significantly reduced level” of impurities to decrease the chance of drug and container interaction. The syringe features an inert cyclic olefin copolymer barrel that releases no ions or heavy metals, and it was developed with pure elastomer components in order to reduce the extractables and leachables profile.
The syringe’s cross-linked silicone for barrel lubrication reduces the amount of subvisible particles, according to the company. Also, it is sterilized through an ethylene oxide method instead of irradiation, to further reduce the extractables and leachables profile.
Aside from the new prefilled syringe features, ToPac SD retains the glass-like transparency, an integrated luer lock system, standardized tub-and-nest offerings, and compatibility with needless IV connectors.
