4. A Dozen Packaging Designs that Missed the Mark
Looking at package design missteps in multiple consumer goods categories, it is apparent that even leading brand owners make mistakes with their packaging from time to time. The top three brands in this dissatisfying dozen, are:
• Lipton, with a package design that replaced individual paper wrappers with gold-foil sleeves for tea bags.
• Hellmann’s, which launched a squeeze bottle for mayonnaise that was reportedly tough to open and didn’t cleanly and easily dispense residual product.
• Tropicana, whose 89-oz handleware container was quite difficult for at least some consumers to open.
