Three US presidents have been shot in my lifetime: Kennedy, Reagan, and Trump. Each event gained widespread media coverage (rightly so), but only the latest struck much closer to my professional home: the packaging industry.

I learned of the first connection almost immediately. The night former President and current republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump was shot at, locals described the building where the shooter perched as a bottle manufacturing plant. My journalistic ears perked up.

We learned of other connections in the following days. Was this a packaging-related story, I wondered? Well, I wanted to learn more, and imagined you would want to know as well. Packaging Digest is not a “hard news” outlet, but we did the research, checked our facts, and answered the who, what, where, why, and how questions as best we could.

You agreed. [Spoiler alert:] Our coverage of the attempted assassination was by far our best read story of July 2024.

There were other great pieces last month, too, that were overshadowed but deserve another look — some with packaging sustainability tips and exclusive insight into the CEO’s strategy at Kraft Heinz.

In reverse order, here are the best-read stories on PackagingDigest.com last month:
