Like many consumers, my weekly trip to the grocery store is more chore than charm. But as a packaging connoisseur and ever on the watch for something spectacular, I always hold out hope that I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Weeks ago, while scanning the dairy case for dip to serve that night for some friends, my eyes alit on a shiny splash of color that seemed to move, to dance. “What is that?!” I whispered to myself.

Amid the sea of flat, often-one-color surface printing on white polyethylene tubs, a ribbon of ruby-red foil on a matte-white oval container beckoned me closer.

When I picked up Daisy’s single-serve cottage cheese (with Strawberries), I realized this was something different from the typical filled-lid-on-top-with-another-product-on-the-bottom package. This one was … hinged! In the store, I noticed that the back of the container, where the container and lid meet, was thicker. But I didn’t realize it was because it was a hinge until I got the package home and played with it.
