MonoSol partners with EPA for safer products
MonoSol LLC has become a partner in the U.S. EPA's Design for the Environment (DfE) Safer Product Labeling program. Four MonoDose films are currently recognized through the DfE program. These films are formulated with environmentally preferable chemistry to have a more positive health and environmental profile in line with the basic goal of the DfE initiative: To seek and promote innovative chemical products, technologies, and practices that benefit human health and the environment.


Be Green Packaging hires construction firm The Austin Co. to build $7.3M facility
Be Green Packaging LLC announced has engaged The Austin Co., a design, engineering and construction firm, to develop the company's new $7.3 million dollar manufacturing facility in Ridgeland, SC. Earlier this year, Be Green announced the purchase of the 27-acre property where it will house the nation's first plant-based, compostable packaging facility operating under the Cradle-to-Cradle Products Innovation Institute's sustainability standards. 


Dates for Interpack 2014 announced
The next staging of Interpack Processes And Packaging will take place from May 8 - 14, 2014 at the fairgrounds in Düsseldorf, Germany. The exhibitor registration will be open in autumn 2012. The exhibitor registration deadline will be in spring 2013, with exact dates to be announced later.

NJM/CLI appointed exclusive N.A. sales agent for Dara Pharmaceutical Packaging
NJM/CLI announces that they have been appointed the exclusive sales agent in North America for Dara Pharmaceutical Packaging. NJM/CLI is responsible for developing sales and providing customer service for Dara's extensive line of high quality liquid filling and closing equipment for pharmaceutical, biotech and cosmetic products to customers in the U.S. and Canada. Dara designs and manufactures liquid filling and closing equipment for pharmaceutical, biotech and cosmetic companies packaging vials, cartridges and syringes.


M-real increases capacity at Simpele Mill by 88,000 tons/year
An additional 80,000 metric tons (88,000 tons) per year of folding boxboard, primarily aimed at meeting increased demand from the food industry, is coming on stream following completion of a rebuild at M-real's Simpele mill in Finland. The rebuild was finished according to schedule on June 1, 2011. In addition to Simpele, M-real is increasing capacity at its Äänekoski and Kyro mills, planned for completion in late 2011 and spring 2012 respectively. As a result of the rebuilds, M-real will increase its total folding boxboard capacity to around 935,000 metric tons (1,030,000 tons). 


EPG inducted into Intl. Metal Decorators Assn.
Essex Products Group (EPG), the Connecticut-based manufacturer of KeyColor ink and color measurement controls and presetting and scanner interface systems, has joined the Intl. Metal Decorators Assn. 


Multisorb Technologies presented on enhancing the crystallization of PLA
Multisorb Technologies senior scientist CC Chau presented at the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) ANTECS 2011 technical conference. Chau's presentation, non-Isothermal Crystallization Of Poly(Lactic Acid): Effect of Nucleation and Cooling Rate, was delivered during the Bioplastics and Polymer Analysis session. Chau discussed the effect of a nucleation agent and the cooling rate on the crystallization of PLA as well as blend compositions. Data which were analyzed using a modified Kissinger method were presented. The data demonstrated that the nucleation effect of talc decreased rapidly as the cooling rate increased. Additionally, the nucleation effect was enhanced as the talc content was increased. Chau also showed a correlation between the modified Kissinger plot and Avrami analysis.

 

Amcor sets new environmental targets
Amcor announced new reduction targets for greenhouse gas emissions, water use and waste to landfill. Using FY 2010/11 as the baseline year, Amcor's new environmental targets are a 10 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions intensity by FY 2015/16; 50 percent reduction in waste to landfill intensity by FY 2015/16; 25 percent reduction in potable water use intensity at Amcor's Australian sites by FY 2015/16 and having active water management plans in place at all other sites by the end of 2011. In addition to the new short term targets, Amcor will continue with the long term emissions reduction target of 60 percent by FY 2029/30, using the baseline year of FY 2005/06.


HWI Global intends to partner on eco-friendly lighting solution
HWI Global Inc., a Pittsburgh-based clean room design-builder, has sent a letter of intent to form a joint venture with Enigma Concepts, a technical research and development company. Enigma Concepts plans to work with HWI Global developing a lighting solution with enhanced scotopic value, a 'green solution' to traditional fluorescent and incandescent lighting.

Tom Schneider elected WPO president
During its first board meeting of 2011 at Interpack in Dusseldorf, Germany, the World Packaging Organization (WPO) elected Thomas L. Schneider, CPP, as WPO's new president for 2012-2014. Schneider was elected by unanimous vote of the WPO Board. Schneider served on the IoPP National Board as president and chair in 2004 and 2005, respectively. He is a member of the IoPP College of Fellows and is also an Honorary Life Member of the Institute.


Multisorb to show turn-key sorbent systems at the 2011 AACC Annual Meeting

Founded 30 years ago, Dereli Graphic distributes graphic products in Turkey and has approximately100 employees. 


RockTenn announces operational organization changes
RockTenn announces the following changes to its operational organization after the completion of its recent acquisition of Smurfit-Stone Container Corp.: Mike Kiepura has been named president, consumer packaging. Kiepura will continue to lead the company's consumer packaging businesses, coated paperboard and folding carton, and will now have oversight responsibility for the company's merchandising displays and specialty paperboard businesses, which will now be reported as part of the company's consumer packaging segment. Jim Porter has been named president, corrugated packaging and recycling. Porter will have leadership responsibility for the company's corrugated packaging, containerboard and recycling and waste solutions businesses.

 

Otto Hektor joins Schawk Retail Marketing as senior VP of account management
Schawk Inc. has hired Otto Hektor to serve as senior v.p. of account management for key accounts within its retail marketing group. In his new role, Hektor has strategic and day-to-day leadership responsibility for key accounts across all eight of Schawk Retail Marketing's global offices and photo studios. This includes some of the world's leading retailers such as The Home Depot, Bloomingdale's, and Lord & Taylor.

 

NPTA Alliance's 2011 PAPER Foundation Scholarship Recipients announced
NPTA Alliance, a paper, packaging and supplies organization in North America, is pleased to announce its 2011 Paper and Plastics Education Research (PAPER) Foundation scholarship recipients. The PAPER Foundation awarded $21,000 to 12 high school seniors entering a four-year college in 2011 and undergraduate students currently enrolled in college.

These scholarships are awarded in the name of James W. Barrett, executive vice president, Central National - Gottesman Inc., the 2011 recipient of the Stanley O. Styles Industry Excellence Award. SunChemical names new group managing director for the Northern European region
Sun Chemical has appointed Greg Hayes as its new group managing director for the northern European region. Hayes brings more than 25 years of relevant industry knowledge and experience to the position. He joins Sun Chemical from PPG Industries Europe Sarl. 


Cargill opens Latin America innovation center
Cargill has opened an advanced food technology and innovation centers in Campinas, state of Sao Paulo (Brazil). The new complex was developed based on sustainable principles and houses technical teams from many fields of knowledge to develop innovative solutions, ingredients and applications in partnership with customers. The result of a R$20 million investment (approximately US $12.6 million), the 20,000 square meter Innovation Center features multiple laboratories to serve customers in the beverage, baking, confectionery, convenience foods and dairy categories. It also includes a flavor and aroma laboratory, and an industrial lab to create and develop ingredients and applications for the paper, textile, corrugated and biopolymer market. 


JSR to promote eco-friendly PLA-based bioplastic
JSR Corp. has announced that significant improvements in key properties and characteristics have been achieved for its PLA-based bioplastic, Biolloy. The material is showing good results in thin wall applications, which will enable lighter weight product and lead to a reduced cost of ownership for end users.

 

AuraPortal opens a new headquarters in Brazil
AuraPortal, a global provider of Business Process Management solutions, has announced the opening of its new headquarters in Brazil, located in Avenida Paulista, Sao Paulo. The companys say the headquarters represents a major step in consolidating AuraPortal in the Brazilian market, as the company can now offer local support to its partner network and to its customers through training initiatives, product improvements, and product support, as a local platform, in line with the needs of its Brazilian customers. 


CRC welcomes customers to 2011 User Group Meeting
CRC Information Systems (CRC), developer of the MIS/ERP system, Nucleus, welcomed customers to the Spring 2011 CRC User Group Conference for three days of product demonstrations emphasizing new enhancements, specific product meetings, and educational breakout sessions. CRC also provided educational breakout seminars on many of the newest features of Nucleus. These seminars covered topics such as the recent addition of full integration with both FedEx Manager and UPS World Ship.

Schawk Inc has relocated its Shanghai office to accommodate its growing presence in China. Braskem sponsored sustainability event in Brazil
Braskem, a producer of thermoplastic resins and biopolymers, was one of the official sponsors of the first edition of Virada Sustentável. The sustainability event was held June 4 and 5 in the city of São Paulo. In addition to the event, Braskem also sponsored special activities, such as the presentation at Ibirapuera Park of a model of its green plastic plant located in Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul. Those who visit the installation will learn more about the production cycle of this plastic, which captures up to 2.5 metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere per metric ton of polyethylene produced, helping to reduce the greenhouse effect.

Intl Paper proposes to acquire Temple-Inland and gets rejected
Intl Paper has proposed to acquire all of the outstanding shares of Temple-Inland for $30.60 per share in cash. Under the terms of the proposal, the offer represents a 44 percent premium to Temple-Inland's price as of noon EDT, June 6th, 2011($21.21). Temple-Inland Inc. rejected the unsolicited proposal. 


Polyone names Joel Rathbun vp of mergers and acquisitions
PolyOne Corp., a provider of specialized polymer materials, services and solutions, has hired Joel Rathbun as vp of mergers and acquisitions, reporting to Robert M. Patterson, executive vp and chief financial officer.Prior to joining PolyOne, Rathbun served as senior vp of mergers and acquisitions at Moelis & Company in New York City. He also spent 10 years with CIBC World Markets in positions of increasing responsibility most recently as executive director
