Pep Boys taps Shell Lubricants’ Ecobox for its service shops

Pep Boys will use Shell Lubricants' Ecobox system to dispense featured Pennzoil brand motor oils in the company's service facilities, including Pennzoil Platinum full synthetic, Pennzoil conventional and Pennzoil High Mileage Vehicle motor oils.

As an alternative to individual quart bottles, the bag-in-box system requires less handling, and dispenses quickly and nearly completely (it boasts a 99.9 percent dispensing efficiency rate). Leaving virtually no oil behind adds up to significant product savings.

Ecobox saves on packaging materials, too. The Ecobox plastic liner results in 89 percent less plastic landfill waste than the equivalent 24 quart plastic bottles, and is easily removed from the outer case, which is recyclable.

Service techs at Pep Boys will be able to dispense the oil in two ways: through the b-i-b's high-flow value into a custom-designed pitcher for transfer to engines or through a pump system directly into the oil crankcase.

Another benefit to car-maintenance shops is reduced storage space. Ecobox is about half the size of the equal amount of oil in single-quart cases.

Tami Presley-Shull, assistant vice president of merchandising at Pep Boys, says, "We believe that using the Ecobox system will help reduce the time a vehicle spends in our service centers, increase technician productivity and help decrease the time our customers spend waiting for their vehicles. The Ecobox system will also reduce our cost-per-quart of oil and help cut down on plastic waste in our environment."

As announced at the package's launch in Jan. 2010, Ecobox is part of Shell's "smarter mobility" approach to developing innovations for cleaner and more efficient transport of people and goods. Smarter mobility has three elements: smarter products, smarter use and smarter infrastructure. The Ecobox system is an example of smarter use, through smarter packaging.
