Dave's Killer Bread adds changeable QR code to packs of Sin Dawg
Independent bakery Dave's Killer Bread is adding a quick-response (QR) code to bags of its whole grain organic Sin Dawg Sinnamon Roll product, reports the seattlepi.com blog. The QR code will connect consumers with smart phones to a variety of content that will continually change to keep it fresh, relevant and valuable, including coupons, videos, recipes, articles, contests, nutritional information and testimonials. VP Dave Dahl says, "Packaging takes a lot of lead time to update, and has space limitations. Changing what the code links to is easy."

 

Flexible packaging veteran joins barrier materials supplier NanoPack
NanoPack Inc., developer of proprietary barrier coatings used in processed food packaging, has named Tony Cella vp of sales for the company's growing North American markets. Cella joins NanoPack with more than 25 years executive experience in flexible packaging sales, most recently as vp of flexible packaging sales with Berry Plastics/Ludlow Coated Products, formerly a division of Tyco Plastics & Adhesives. Additionally, he has worked with Pechiney Plastic Packaging, AET Films and Mobil Chemical Co.

 

Group O commits to environmental stewardship, joins U.N. Global Compact program
Group O—specialist in marketing operations, supply-chain and packaging solutions—has joined the United Nations Global Compact, the world's largest corporate citizenship and sustainability initiative. As a signatory, Group O will support the Global Compact's 10 universal principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption, reinforcing the company's commitment to responsible business practices on a global basis.

 

Placon earns ISO 14001 certification
Placon has obtained certification to ISO 14001:2004, the international standard that specifies a process for controlling and improving an organization's environmental performance. Awarded by BSI Management System, one of the world's largest certification bodies, for Placon's environmental management system, this ISO 14001 certification covers all of Placon's business lines, including food, retail and medical markets for both thermoforming and the company's EcoStar extruded roll-stock materials.

 

DuPont Awards entry deadline approaching
The deadline for entries in the 23rd DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation is Feb. 28, 2011. Entry forms are available on-line at www.packaging.dupont.com. This year's jury panel will be headed by John Bernardo, principal, Sustainable Innovations LLC, and includes industry experts from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, China, Brazil and India.
