As a reflection of its commitment to lightening its carbon footprint on the planet, Philadelphia Distilling, Philadelphia, is using a glass bottle from Saxco Intl. (www.saxcointl.com) that is partially made from recycled glass, with labels from Xode Inc. (www.xode.com) that are made with organic inks and a biodegradable wood top from TapiUSA (www.tapiusa.com) for its newest product, Penn1681 rye vodka. Further enhancing its efforts, the company exchanges the spent grains from its alcohol production with local farmers when new deliveries of organic rye are made. The spent grains are used on the farms as feedstock and fertilizer. Also, throughout the distillery, there are innovative engineering systems and techniques that lower power use.
Philadelphia Distilling introduced the vodka in November 2008 in response to requests from its customers. “We had been asked over and over again for a vodka, especially in the Philly area,” says a company representative. “Customers wanted to buy locally when it came to their spirits. We had so many requests, we felt that it made good sense. We make the vodka exclusively from organic rye, that is grown locally, and we are the only craft distillery in the area that is handcrafting a vodka. Consumers love its character and smooth finish.” Penn 1681 vodka sells for $20 to $23 per bottle.
