Packaging company to bring manufacturing jobs to North Carolina

The North Carolina Department of Commerce issued the following news release:

Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that Global Packaging, Inc., a manufacturer of consumer packaging materials, will locate a new manufacturing facility in Richmond County. The company plans to create 64 jobs and invest $1.7 million during the next three years in Hamlet. The project was made possible in part by a $64,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

"My number one priority is creating jobs, and not just in the big cities but throughout North Carolina," Gov. Perdue said. "Global Packaging's decision to locate in Hamlet is a testament to our nationally recognized business climate and our highly skilled workforce."

Pennsylvania based Global Packaging is a wide web flexographic printer. Global prints high-quality graphics on a variety of film-based substrates and converts the printed material into a bag or sells the roll stock products. Global Packaging will take over the recently closed Alpha Plastics facility in Hamlet.
The new facility will manufacture the film product for internal use. In addition, Global will be installing printing and bag converting equipment.

Salaries will vary by job function, but the average annual wage for the new jobs will be $47,078 not including benefits. The Richmond County average annual wage is $26,624.

"The Governor's Office and Richmond County have made us feel welcome and their efforts will help us be successful and create many jobs," said Global Packaging CEO Anthony J. Maginnis.

The One NC Fund provides financial assistance, through local governments, to attract business projects that will stimulate economic activity and create new jobs in the state. Companies receive no money up front and must meet job creation and investment performance standards to qualify for grant funds. These grants also require and are contingent upon local matches.

"Even in these difficult times, we have made sure to invest in education, worker training and transportation, the crucial elements to building a top business climate, and those investments are paying off with great news like today's," said Sen. Bill Purcell, who represents Richmond County.

"Companies look at more than just dollar figures," said Rep. Ken Goodman, who also represents Richmond County. "They want educated and trained employees, a transportation system that helps them succeed, good schools for their children and quality of life for their families. They find all of those in North Carolina
because of the policies we have pursued."

North Carolina continues to have a top-ranked business climate. Through Gov. Perdue's JobsNOW initiative, the state works aggressively to create jobs, train and retrain its workforce, and lay the foundation for a strong and sustainable economic future.

Through use of the One NC Fund, more than 50,000 jobs and $9 billion in investment have been created since 2001. Other partners that helped with this project include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, Richmond Community College and Richmond County.
