Environmentally friendly and theft-resistant, Natralock(TM) is a paperboard-based packaging material designed as an alternative to plastic clamshell packaging. Combining traits of paperboard and blister-packs, it makes more surface area available for printing text and graphics than traditional clamshells do, the co. claims. Tear-resistant, it deters theft while reducing “wrap-rage,” and it minimizes the impact to the environment. Natralock is formed by running unbleached kraft paper or the co.’s Printkote(R) bleached kraft through a patented coating process that applies a heat-sealable material. An additional tear-resistant material can also be added during the process. Graphics can then be printed on the clay-coated surface. Natralock is said to seal easily without producing hazardous emissions. According to the co., recent third-party evaluations of Natralock versus traditional PVC packaging indicate that “Natralock packaging materials require fewer raw materials, less energy and a lower average of chemical ‘bad actors’ for production than the PVC alternative.” In addition, the co. says, the tests showed that “the production and disposal of the Natralock materials also resulted in lower GHG emissions.”
