The co. has signed a global agreement with Australian-based Unistraw Intl. Ltd. for a patented, on-pack drinking straw that can deliver probiotics in long-life milk, dairy products and juice. The on-pack straw is compatible with most of the co.’s aseptic portion-pack drink cartons, allowing producers to offer consumers long-life products with probiotics. The straw stores the probiotics in the form of dry, stable UniBeads held in place by filters at both of its ends. The beads dissolve as the liquid is sipped through the straw. With this method, probiotic beverages need no refrigeration and can have a shelf life of up to 12 months. Global availability is scheduled for mid-2009.
