Editor's Note: UBM is the parent company of Packaging Digest.
Leading events organiser, UBM Live, has expanded its annual CPhI Pharma Awards with the introduction of a Best Sustainable Packaging award category for 2012. The new category will recognise one exhibitor that delivered a specific material, process or piece of equipment in 2011 that enabled pharma companies to achieve a more sustainable package or process. Entries for the Best Sustainable Packaging category are open from now until Aug. 10. Further information about the categories and submission deadlines for the CPhI Pharma Awards can be found at www.cphi.com/awards.
The new Best Sustainable Packaging category will be included alongside the recurring Best Innovation and Best Sustainable Stand Design categories to complete the CPhI Pharma Awards, featured during CPhI Worldwide held from Oct. 9-11, 2012 at the Feria de Madrid in Spain. The Best Sustainable Stand Design will also feature one winner, while the Best Innovation category will recognise a gold, silver and bronze winner.
"We introduced a Sustainable Packaging Award category this year for a few reasons," says Andrew Pert, brand director for UBM Live. "First of all, it is no secret that sustainability has become a key focus area for the pharmaceutical industry in recent times. Beyond that, it also falls in line with UBM Live's commitment to sustainability as an events organiser. The Best Innovation, Best Sustainable Packaging and Best Sustainable Stand Design Award categories exist to encourage innovation, advancement and responsibility within the pharmaceutical community. In particular, our new Packaging category has been designed to encourage the Pharma community to continue to innovate while also maximizing resources and minimizing footprint for a greener future."
Six finalists for the Best Sustainable Packaging category will present to a judging panel consisting of UBM Live executives and media partners on the first day of the show, Oct. 9. The winner will be announced as part of the Exhibitor Reception Party later that evening. Judges will make their selection by analysing how each entry achieved one or more of the following criteria in 2011:
• Reduction in package weight, size or quantity
• Reduction in the use of energy, water or other resources
• Reduction in or repurposing of certain manufacturing by-products
• Elimination of certain processes or manufacturing steps
• Use of alternative materials
Additionally, the judges will look at how the entry affects the product lifecycle and whether pharmaceutical integrity and patient safety were taken into consideration.
In early 2012, UBM Live was one of the first event organisers to achieve the BS8901 Sustainability standard, a British Standard developed specifically for the events industry with the purpose of helping the industry to operate in a more sustainable manner. All of the categories within the 2012 CPhI Pharma Awards reflect UBM Live's commitment to innovation and sustainability, and encourage visitors and exhibitors to make the same commitment.
