PepsiCo, the world's second largest food and beverage company, is working with Pakit Inc. to develop new sustainable packaging.

 

Over the past 10 years, Pakit has developed commercial capabilities of its technology that can turn cellulose fiber into recyclable and biodegradable molded board to replace the plastic and foam packaging currently used in packaging. Molded board is also thinner and offers a smooth exterior surface, significantly improving logo and advertising print quality compared to other sustainable competitors, according to Pakit.

 

The technology makes it possible to form products with complicated shapes—from compartmental plates, clamshells and trays for the food industry to protective packaging for the electronics and pharmaceutical industries—with little or no risk of cracking or deformation. The natural advantage of fiber, with its highly dense fiber network, results in a product that is smooth, rigid and resistant to moisture and grease. Products can be made using a variety of virgin and recycled natural fibers and can go from freezer to microwave or oven.
