American protein products maker Smithfield announced that its Smithfield Packaged Meats Corp. plant in Sioux Center, IA is recalling 185,610 lb of ready-to-eat (RTE) bacon toppings after receiving a consumer complaint that metal was found in a product.

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) published a notice on the recall on May 20. Impacted products were manufactured on several dates between Feb. 21, 2022 and Mar. 5, 2022 and sent to retailers and distributors across the US.

“The problem was discovered after the firm received a customer complaint reporting they found metal in the RTE bacon topping product,” FSIS wrote in the recall announcement. “There have been no confirmed reports of injuries or adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.”

Smithfield is urging retailers and distributors to halt sales of the products and dispose of them.

Also this month, Powder & Bulk Solids reported that Mars Wrigley issued a voluntary recall for several types of gummies sold under the Skittles, Starburst, and Life Savers brands for the possible presence of a very thin strand of metal embedded in the products or loose in the package.
