Bag-in-box wine feeds new wine-on-tap dispense system

Better Barrel Wine Co. has rolled out the Better Barrel, a new wine dispense system designed to protect wine quality while speeding the adoption and growth of environmentally-friendly wine-on-tap programs.

Unlike existing traditional poured-from-bottle and keg-based wine-by-the-glass solutions, the patent-pending Better Barrel system eliminates all peripheral equipment needed for wine-by-the-glass service and drastically reduces the costs and resources associated with the transportation, proper storage and management of gas cylinders, kegs, tap equipment, refrigerators and glass bottles (glass bottles are currently the largest source of carbon emissions from the wine industry).

Ease of implementation
Leveraging a combination of traditional aesthetics with state-of-the art wine packaging technology, the Better Barrel system is traditionally made from fire-bent White Oak and is hand assembled. It does not use returnable kegs and therefore, does not require a costly and complex supply chain unsupported by traditional wine distributors. A compact, self-contained system which includes on-board electronic temperature control, the Better Barrel does not require custom installation or refrigeration equipment. In addition, it does not require the gas or the bacteria-harboring dispense tubing and tap equipment required for all kinds of wine dispense systems and does not displace the revenue of existing beer tap lines.

Designed to require minimal shelf-space, the Better Barrel can be installed nearly flush with a rear wall on a shelf or counter and operates on low-voltage from a standard wall socket. It does not require any facilitization and is completely plug and play.

Better Barrel will be releasing the first 100 individually hand-assembled and sequentially serial numbered dispense systems and related custom-labeled wine to on-premise operators in California in October 2011. The Better Barrel is priced at $199.

Better Barrel is also offering its innovative wine dispenser to wine brands wishing to participate in the wine-on-tap market. Partner wine brands are ensured that their wines are always served fresh and at the proper temperature. They can package their wines in the Better Barrel format for a small license fee and release their own branded dispenser through their normal distribution channels giving on-premise operators and consumers an array of wine choices.

In addition, Better Barrel plans to soon release its own ultra-premium wine brand which focuses on individual lots of distinctive red and white wines.
