The project will help the company to meet current and future demand for disinfecting wipe products.

Plastic packaging and nonwoven products maker Berry Global plans to inject $70 million to expand its manufacturing operations in Benson, NC after local officials approved performance-based incentives for the project, a release issued by Johnston County Economic Development said Monday.

The company is investing in the site in response to increased demand for its disinfecting wipe brands. While the market for disinfecting wipes grew by about 6% per year from 2014 to 2019, sales of the products skyrocketed during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data gathered by trade media organization Happi.

“The investment by Berry in this state of the art, highspeed proprietary technology at our Benson facility allows us to support both the ongoing demand and future innovation of cleaning and hygiene solutions to meet the global needs of our customers,” said Mark Siebert, executive vice president and general manager for healthcare and specialties for Berry Global, in a release. “We are extremely appreciative of the Johnson County Board of Commissioners and local Benson officials for their joint support of this initiative.”

Berry will create 60 new jobs at the Benson plant as a result of the project. 217 workers are currently employed at the site.

North Carolina State University Professor Emeritus Dr. Michael Walden estimates that the expansion will generate $21.5 million in output each year for Johnston County’s economy.
