College makes recycling, donations to worthy causes easier
January 30, 2014
Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) is about to get a little greener. The College and PepsiCo have installed two Dream Machines and several recycling centers to campus for students, faculty and staff to recycle their plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
Each time a bottle or can is recycled, a transaction receipt is issued. These can then be used to enter drawings to win gift certificates to the OCCC bookstore as well as other prizes. First introduced on Earth Day 2010, the Dream Machines are now popping up in popular, highly-trafficked locations such as college campuses, gas stations, retail stores, sports stadiums, and public parks. "We're so happy to have Oklahoma City Community College as a Dream Machine partner," said Jennifer Ryan, media bureau manager for PepsiCo. Dream Machines come in two forms - kiosks and traditional, static bins. The program is designed around PepsiCo's goal of increasing the U.S. beverage container recycling rate from 34 percent to 50 percent by 2018. But Dream Machines are more than just recycling bins. Every bottle and can deposited leads to a donation, made by PepsiCo, to the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities to help post-9/11 disabled U.S. veterans make their own dreams come true. OCCC officials believe the installation of the Dream Machines will advance the college's mission of being an environmentally-responsible campus.
