Cocoa and chocolate products manufacturer Barry Callebaut held an event on September 28 to mark the start of work on its new specialty chocolate plant in Brantford, ON, a recent company release announced. The $100 million location is expected to open in 2024. The facility will produce sugar-free, high protein, and other specialty chocolate and cocoa products.
Barry Callebaut executives Chris DiMambro, Balaji Padmanabhan, Angie Kopper attended the event, along with Steve Woolley, president and CEO of Barry Callebaut Americas, and local government officials.
More than 200 new jobs will be created with the opening of the new site.
Plans for the Brantford plant were first announced by Barry Callebaut in May 2022, Powder & Bulk Solids reported. The facility will be the company’s second largest plant in the Americas region and its largest-ever capital investment in a North American manufacturing site.
“Consumers are searching for healthier and tasty solutions for the foods they love. ‘Free from’ foods like sugar-free or dairy-free are healthier options that also satisfy the indulgence they are craving,” Woolley, president, said in an announcement at the time. “Through the addition of a sugar-free facility, Barry Callebaut is positioning itself to be the leader in ‘Better for You’ offerings for our customers, which include a range of low- and sugar-free solutions.”
The company selected Brantford as the site of the planned facility in August. When construction is completed, the plant will have an initial capacity of over 50,000 mt/yr of liquid and molded chocolate.
The chocolate maker has made several major investments in its global production footprint this year. This March, Barry Callebaut added new production lines to its plant in Campbellfield, Australia and the company opened a new chocolate manufacturing site in Baramati, India.
