Mintel Product of the Month: Duck Foie Gras with Hypocras Wine

FoieGrasAn even more premium feel is being given to foie gras through the use of especially elaborate packaging. New in France from Comtesse du Barry is Duck Foie Gras with Hypocras Wine, a partially cooked foie gras specialty available in a 90-g plain glass jar featuring silk screened and flexo-printed information on a p-s label, apparently made from PP. The jar is closed with a vacuum-sealed tin plate screw-on cap.

The attractive part of the package is the outer card sheet, finished in embossed linen that is cleverly engineered to close in a decorative spiral shape. It is foil-blocked and sealed with a litho-printed plain paper label.

The elaborate packaging, the ethical positioning and the detailing of provenance (the meat is from Label Rouge free-range duck farmers in southwest France) all go a long way in denoting quality. Moreover, the free-range element is likely to counter some of the controversy surrounding foie gras and taps into the Mintel Inspire Trend Observation, The Goose Whisperer, which details how "raising geese in natural elements-rather than cages-may be the best way for people to experience foie gras."
