Terracycle to 'upcycle' Mission Foods packaging

Mission Foods®, one of the nation's largest tortilla manufacturers, has partnered with upcycling company TerraCycle, Inc.® to recover and reuse its plastic food bags and metal lids through TerraCycle's collection programs called Brigades. Mission® brand tortilla, wrap and tostada bags and dip and salsa lids will all be accepted.

The partnership with TerraCycle represents one part of Mission Foods' sustainability initiative - "Today's Mission for a Better Tomorrow." To implement the new sustainability initiative, Mission Foods has developed a corporate responsibility program that not only addresses environmental issues, but also consumers' demands. The upcycling of Mission plastic bags and metal lids is a new industry standard and demonstrates the company's commitment to finding ways to lower its carbon footprint while continuing to deliver the finest quality tortilla products.

The Tortilla and Tostada Bag BrigadeTM will pay two cents per unit of packaging to either Mission Foods' charity partner Share Our Strength®, the leading national nonprofit striving to end childhood hunger in America or brigade participants can select their own charity of choice. The used bags and lids will then be upcycled into consumer branded items.

"While our bags are #4 plastic and are recyclable, many municipalities don't accept plastics beyond numbers one and two," said Terry Hockens, Senior Brand Manager for Mission Foods."We wanted to give all our consumers a free option to help the environment as well as raise money for charity."

Mission Foods has grown to become one of the largest producers of tortilla products, producing almost a quarter of all tortillas sold in the world. In fact, tortilla sales trail white bread sales by only two percent, making them the second most popular bread type in America. Tortilla sales have doubled to more than $6 billion in the last decade1.

TerraCycle's Brigades divert packaging waste from landfills and help to raise consumer awareness about reducing, reusing and recycling. By encouraging people to rethink "what is waste," TerraCycle is making it simple for consumers to have a positive impact on the environment. Participation is free and all shipping costs are paid.
