Silgan Plastics, a leading manufacturer of plastic containers, has installed the first Avery Dennison Curve Appeal labeling system in North America at its Ligonier, IN, manufacturing plant. This labeling system combines Fasson Curvy pressure-sensitive label material with a new patent-pending Avery Dennison application process that will enable Silgan to apply pressure-sensitive labels to complex curved package shapes, creating a more eye-catching billboard on each bottle.

"Expanding the label billboard creates an exciting option for brand owners," says Stacy Sheridan, Silgan's marketing manager. "From trials with new packaging shapes to redefining existing pressure-sensitive label applications, we're excited to offer this unique technology to our customers."

The Avery Dennison Curve Appeal technology allows package designers to expand the label footprint around the curves of a bottle, creating up to 100 percent more labeling area while still delivering the smooth look and feel of pressure-sensitive labeling. It also creates larger back panels that can carry necessary product or multi-language information in easily-readable type.

A larger branding area gives bottled products more shelf presence. The new labels can also accommodate the newest graphic enhancements, including foils, tactile printing and surface finishes that encourage the consumer to pick up the bottle. Fasson Curvy labels also deliver smoother squeeze performance and improved moisture resistance over shrink-sleeve labeling.

This innovative labeling can be applied to bottles ranging in size up to 10 inches in height, 3 inches in width and 4.1 inches in length. Label sizes can range from 0.5 to 8 inches in height and 4.1 inches wide.

The Avery Dennison Curve Appeal labeling system installed at the Ligonier plant uses the proprietary Fasson Curvy pressure-sensitive film material in both white and clear—material that can be supplied through the traditional label converter channel. The linear label application equipment is manufactured under license to Harland Machine Systems Ltd., a leader in the design and manufacture of pressure-sensitive labeling machines.
