Nelipak acquires Computer Designs

Nelipak Corp. has acquired Computer Designs Inc., uniting two thermoforming leaders in the medical packaging industry. The two teams will operate under the name of Nelipak Healthcare Packaging and produce trays, clamshells, and blisters for the healthcare market.  

The acquisition continues Nelipak’s growth. Last year Nelipak acquired thermoforming company Tegrant Alloyd Brands of Puerto Rico Inc., a subsidiary of Sonoco Products Co., broadening its footprint.

The latest transaction furthers such expansion. “Computer Designs has a strong customer base in the United States and Latin America, which will allow Nelipak to take further advantage of growth opportunities in North America, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and the broader Caribbean regions,” Seán Egan, Director of Global Marketing, Nelipak Healthcare Packaging, tells PMP News. “At the same time, Computer Designs’s customers will now have access to Nelipak’s award-winning design teams and modern cleanroom manufacturing throughout its global locations.” 

Egan adds that both Nelipak and Computer Designs have “a long and proven history in the thermoformed healthcare packaging market and have built excellent reputations and strong customer bases. The acquisition strengthens Nelipak’s commitment to customers in the North and Latin American healthcare markets, while Computer Designs’s customers will now benefit from Nelipak’s best-in-class manufacturing and cleanroom facilities around the world, allowing Computer Designs to further develop its thermoformed packaging products and service capabilities for the healthcare market.” 

For instance, Nelipak and Computer Designs have each distinguished themselves in distinct ways. “Computer Designs brings strong design experience along with technical acumen in thermoforming,” Egan says. “Nelipak uniquely combines freehand design capabilities with technology and a thorough understanding of industry trends, as well as end-user needs and challenges, to create optimized healthcare packaging that can better serve its purpose, reduce waste, and even minimize risk factors when used in critical environments.”

Egan believes the combined expertise in the healthcare market will provide advantages to new and existing customers. Current plans include upgrading Computer Designs’s facilities to Class 8 cleanroom standards and having all sites implement a program to complete certification to ISO 13485, Egan says.

In terms of integrating the two teams, Egan says that “CDI has filled an important niche in the market with a history of delivering value to its customers. Nelipak will continue to leverage CDI’s strong tradition in design, operational excellence, and production capabilities to deliver customers with innovative designs, world-class quality, and excellent service. The Computer Designs team have been welcomed as part of Nelipak Healthcare Packaging.”

Nelipak will be in Booths 1657 and 1457 at the upcoming Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East June 13-15 and can discuss the acquisition and its continued company growth at the show.
