With business in the medical device market, packaging machinery manufacturer Harpak-ULMA has had a front-row seat into Operation WARP Speed. In a January 27 blog, the company explains how (1) Alternative packaging methods; (2) Automation; and (3) Individualized packaging are leaving “an indelible mark on medical device production.”
Main insight: “The changes that are taking place as a result of necessity are reshaping producer (and even government regulators’) risk tolerance and generating new expectations for disposable medical device packaging.”

Tekni-Plex Adds Medical Packaging Distributor in Brazil
Healthcare packaging manufacturer Tekni-Plex has entered into a distributor agreement with PackPlus Embalagens (Ibipora, Paraná, Brazil) for coated DuPont Tyvek and coated paper rollstock offerings.
According to the company, “Breathable sterilizable substrates produced by Tekni-Plex will be converted by PackPlus, Brazil, into printed slit rolls, die-cut lids, chevron pouches and tubing. The materials will be used to package a variety of medical devices manufactured in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.”

Jeff Wollerman to Lead Cretex Medical
Cretex Companies — parent company to Cretex Medical businesses Meier, JunoPacific, QTS, rms Company, rms Surgical, and Spectralytics; and a leading provider of contract manufacturing and engineering services to the medical device industry — announces the retirement of CEO Lynn Schuler, who had a successful 36-year career with the company.
Jeff Wollerman has been promoted as successor CEO. Hired in 2005, Wollerman was promoted to chief operating officer in 2008 and has been “instrumental in the company’s transformation to a medical device contract manufacturer,” according to the company.
Placon Wins WorldStar Award for Medical Packaging
Placon’s Custom Medical Packaging solution has won a WorldStar award in the medical and pharmaceutical category from the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). The package holds medical screw implants and other implant/instrument assemblies. It has outer and inner sterile barriers with a unique grip feature on the edges for easier and more secure handling of the sterile barrier when wearing medical gloves.
“The WorldStar awards are well recognized within the packaging industry and we are very humbled to have been awarded this award for the second consecutive year in the medical category,” said John MacDougall, Placon medical sales manager, in a press release. “This award solidifies the value of our design team as they continue to create award-winning patented designs and packaging solutions for our customers.”

Healthcare Label Manufacturer Joins RFID Group
German-based labeling maker Schreiner MediPharm has joined US-based consortium DoseID, an association working to establish an industry-wide standard for the use of radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags on packaging for medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Such a standard doesn’t exist yet for the healthcare market, which can benefit from this technology for track-and-trace solutions.
