Pharmaceutical & Medical Packaging News staff

Since 1998, the Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEAs) have recognized innovation in the design, engineering, manufacture, or distribution of finished medical devices. Winners last year in the Drug-Delivery Devices and Combination Products category included the EVARREST Fibrin Sealant Patch from Ethicon, the DuoResp Spiromax from Teva Pharmaceuticals Europe, and the Evzio Naloxone Auto-Injector Kaleo Pharma Inc.

The competition opened November 16 for submissions from companies involved with finished medical devices, including instruments, machines, implants, in vitro reagents, mobile medical applications, or other related products that are intended for the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease or other conditions in humans or animals. (Product components by themselves are not eligible.)

10 Product Categories to Enter

1. Critical-Care and Emergency Medicine Products

2. Diagnostic Products and Systems (including “approved for diagnostic” analyzers, bio-chemicals for diagnostic use, related instrumentation, testing, and home-use devices, with emphasis beyond the technology on workflow and ease of use features relative to other products).

3. Drug-Delivery Devices and Combination Products (including pre-filled syringes, misting devices, dry powder inhalers, drug-eluting stents, patches, pouches, or combination implants with biologic agents, etc.).

4. FDA-Approved Mobile Medical Applications (Apps).

5. General Hospital Devices and Therapeutic Products.

6. Implant and Tissue-Replacement Products (including cochlear, corneal, orthopedic, and tissue implants and instruments)

7. Over-the-Counter and Self-Care Products

8. Radiological and Electromechanical Devices (including diagnostic imaging devices, energy-emitting therapy devices)

9. Rehabilitation and Assistive-Technology Products (including healthcare furnishings, patient-transfer equipment, and home-use medical equipment and supplies)

10. Surgical Equipment, Instruments, and Supplies

Entries can be submitted by the product’s OEM or by suppliers that provide materials, components, or services with the OEM’s written consent.

To be eligible for entry in the MDEA competition, products must be commercially available (able to be ordered or purchased) by December 31 in the year prior to the competition.

Products will be judged on design and engineering innovations; functional innovations; benefits to the patient; place in the competitive landscape; and impact on overall healthcare.

The final deadline for entries is Jan. 24.

Winners will be reocgnized at the live MDEA ceremony at the MD&M East expo and conference in New York City in June 2016.
