Packaging design: Surf film rides into markets in eco-conscious DVD case

Korduroy TV has debuted Tom’s Creation Plantation, a surf film and instructional movie highlighting wooden Alai’a board surfing and shaping, in ECOpack, a 100-percent recycled kraft paper DVD case.

“While looking for environmentally friendly DVD packaging, we found that nearly every company outsourced their production to Asia,” explains filmmaker and Korduroy founder Cyrus Sutton. “It just didn’t make sense to have something made halfway around the world.”

The ECOpack was co-developed by Korduroy TV and Greenerprinter (www.greenerprinter.com), an eco-conscious printer located in CA. It is made from 50-percent post-consumer wastepaper. The printing is done with vegetable-based inks, and the case features a pocket system that does not require plastic on the interior to hold booklets or DVDs. The result is a durable yet lighter package that also uses less fuel to ship.
