While many food companies are trying new packaging formats, such as flexible pouches, grocery store shelves still are dominated to a large extent by the old-standby-cans. One such company is McCall Farms, a South Carolina-based operation specializing in products featuring vegetables that thrive in the state's climate. Its offerings include Simple Suppers, a new line of vegetables and flavored sauces that can be added to meat to create a true Southern meal in minutes.
Â
"We have always understood the benefits of packaging fresh vegetables and produce in metal cans and have relied on the format to uphold our brand image," explains Marion Swink, co-president of McCall Farms. "Other than eating them fresh from the field, the best and most nutritious way to enjoy vegetables and produce is out of a can."
Â
McCall Farms is also working on a project to highlight the nutritional benefits of canned food on its labels, with a "Can Fact" and a QR code directing consumers to get more info on the web; it also will aim to educate consumers about the can's ease of recycling.

The company's cans are supplied by Crown Food Packaging.
