Women are underrepresented at many craft brewing companies — but not so at Sapporo USA/Stone Brewing. There, all the packaging designers are women.

Art director Joanna Dawson, senior graphic designer Laurel Syring, and graphic designer Emily Devlin design all of Sapporo USA/Stone Brewing’s packaging. The company’s marketing department is woman-led, as well.

With breweries in Southern California and Virginia, Stone Brewing pioneered West Coast Style IPA and was an early participant in the craft beer boom. Founded in 1996, Stone operates bistros and tap rooms in addition to its brewing facilities.

Japanese brewer Sapporo acquired Stone Brewing in 2022; Stone’s team now produces all Sapporo beer for the US market and manages the brand’s US sales, marketing, and business operations.

In honor of Women’s History Month, we talked with the combined company’s packaging designers to learn more about their work. Start the slideshow to see how three remarkable women are shaping the future of beer packaging.
