Kuraray to show thermoplastic elastomers and barrier copolymer at Pharmapack North America

Kuraray, developer of specialty chemical, dental, fiber, elastomer, and resin products, will be featuring its Septon, Hybrar, and EVAL lines at Pharmapack North America on June 9-10 in New York at booth 4009. It will be the company’s second time at the event.

Septon and Hybrar are thermoplastic elastomers and are used in applications that need a “soft-touch” polymer or value sound damping, according to Deborah Carpenter, marketing manager at Kuraray. The applications include IV bags. 

“EVAL is a barrier copolymer commonly found in food packaging,” she tells PMP News. “EVAL is used in blister packets, nutraceuticals, ostomy bags, etc.”

With EVAL, as pharmaceutical architecture becomes increasingly complex, so does its sensitivity to oxygen and contamination. According to Kuraray, EVAL provides superior oxygen and chemical barriers that offer safe and transparent alternatives to PAN, PVDC, and aluminum foil. The EVAL barrier can be added to a wide range of packaging options, from pouches, SUP, and overwrap, to bottles to formed push-through packs. For the most sensitive applications, unique oxygen-scavenging EVAL adds extra safety and extends shelf life by reducing oxygen ingress to zero, according to the company.

Carpenter says Kuraray is continuing its development of applications for barrier and elastomer products “in an effort to support many end users who are looking to step-change replace PVC material.”

“We are constantly challenged by the changing market,” she says. “Many of our customers look at us as the true experts in packaging engineering. We are working with many of our customers and our customers’ customer to develop unique and valuable changes to their packaging selections.” 

Additionally, Kuraray acquired Plantic this year. It makes a bio-based barrier polymer that can be found in high-end food trays.
