Ursatec to feature OptiLung inhaler at Pharmapack North America
December 17, 2015
Ursatec, a preservative-free pharmaceutical product developer of spray pumps for oral, nasal, and inhalation sprays, is gearing up for Pharmapack North America in New York on June 9. It will be showcasing its OptiLung inhaler at Booth 4118 and the company will be at Pharmapack’s Innovation Gallery.
Ursatec leaders say they plan to expand its technology to new applications and market worldwide.
“The Ursatec state-of-the-art technology meets the highest global quality standards,” Alfred Reidelshoefer, international sales and marketing representative, tells PMP News. “Safe protection against contamination, even after first use of a package, is guaranteed by the dual microbiological protection of the patented dosing systems.”
The OptiLung is a pocket-sized aerosol drug-delivery device for aqueous solutions. It releases a mono-disperse aerosol, targeting the central lung.
“It’s the ideal device for asthma/COPD – therapy, combining the advantages of pMDis and ultrasonic nebulizers,” Reidelshoefer said. “The preservative-free spray pump is based on proven 3K spray pump technology platforms used over 15 years.”
OptiLung comes in 5- and 10-milliliter containers with a 25-milligram pump delivery. There are approximately 200 doses in the 5-milliliter container and approximately 400 doses in the 10-milliliter container, according to Ursatec.
Reidelshoefer notes OptiLung is a co-development of three innovative firms: Aeropump, Ursatec, and Medspray. Founded in 1976, Aeropump is a global manufacturer of pharmaceutical application systems, and Medspray designs and develops aerosol and spray devices for inhalation products.
“Preservative-free formulations in healthcare products are desired by consumers and healthcare authorities,” he said. “Many advantages such as safety reasons, economic, and environmental aspects favor the use of preservative-free multidose systems.”“Safe protection against contamination, even after first use of a package, is guaranteed by the dual microbiological protection of the patented dosing systems,” he said. “From the product idea, the supply of systems, aseptic filling (GMP-compliant) to packaging services, Ursatec covers every step with their partners. Ursatec is a market leader in Europe having sold over one billion units of preservative free spray pump systems within the last 20 years.”
Reidelshoefer claims that since 2004 German health authorities have stated that preservatives should be avoided in healthcare products wherever possible. He also cites a 2006 Outsourcing-Pharma.com article noting the FDA’s cautioning to the pharma industry to develop preservative-free nasal sprays.
Ursatec has recently opened new manufacturing lines for OptiLung in Frankfurt. Also in 2015, Reidelshoefer says the company will set up a series production line in Germany for pump parts and assembling. In 2016, Ursatec will complete a new aseptic contract filling line.
