Sainsbury’s markets new caterpillar pack for apples
On Mar. 23, 2011, Sainsbury's launched a new packaging format for apples in 330 convenience stores across the UK. According to company spokesman Thomas Knorpp, Sainsbury's is the first major retailer to use this innovative packaging concept.
Clear flexible wrap holds four medium-sized apples. The first of the three products to launch is Granny Smith at £1, followed by Royal Gala and Fuji retailing at £1.50 and £2.00 respectively by mid May.
Dr. Theresa Huxley, Sainsbury's technologist, says, "With the Granny Smith being such a success so far, we anticipate future launches from the range will be well received by customers. Besides offering our convenience store customers a bespoke product tailored to meet their needs, the caterpillar pack uses less packaging than four apples packed in tray packs."
