Innovative pull-tab opening distinguishes cocktail pouches

Innovative pull-tab opening distinguishes cocktail pouches
Distinctive pouch makes U.S. debut with 5-product line of WingDing Wine Cocktails.

ProAmpac’s pull-tab pouch packaging makes U.S. debut with Festive Beverage’s launch of a new line of ready-to-drink cocktails. The tab covers a premade hole for straw insertion.

The ProAmpac Pull Tab beverage pouch will now be marketed and produced in the United States for alcoholic beverages with the launch of Festive Beverage’s new ready-to-drink cocktails for WingDing Wine Cocktails. The line features five products: Margarita, Electric Lemonade, Strawberry Daiquiri, Long Island Iced Tea and Strawberry Colada. It is the only flavored cocktail beverage available in the U.S. States in a single-serve stand-up pouch with straw hole and easy to open tab. The pouch size is 375mL/12.7oz.

The products, which can be chilled or frozen, are targeted to consumers between the age of 21 and 35 who desire a convenient and portable alcoholic beverage for boating, golfing, parks, beaches and sporting events.

“The ProAmpac Pull Tab pouch provides a new and unique experience for consumers,” says Millie Nuño, ProAmpac’s director of marketing. “The new format provides consumer convenience and is a fun, unique way to enjoy a cocktail.”

Features opening tab over premade straw hole

Ampac’s Pull Tab award winning beverage pouch, which first launched in Switzerland for a local juice brand in 2014, is an alternative format to the traditional straw-punch beverage pouch. It is new to the beverage market and provides a hygienic protection of the straw hole with a tear away, customized Ampac Pull Tab label. The premade hole on the pouch body, covered by the label that is applied by fully automatic label dispensers, is novel for this application. The convenient, easy open pull tab feature allows a larger hole from which to drink slurries, which makes it ideal for a frozen ready-to-drink cocktail. Traditional pouches require the consumer to pour the contents into another glass before consuming.

The technology of this pouch is currently produced in Ampac’s Kirchberg, Switzerland location, but is now available in the United States. The Pull Tab pouch now includes alcoholic beverages in a larger 375mL-size format compared to the original 200-mL size for fruit juice based drinks.

Additional features enhance the pouch’s portability. In comparison to other competing products on the market, the Pull Tab beverage pouch with attached straw creates convenient straw access with no need to tear open the pouch or use a separate cup. The straw hole is pre-cut so no piercing of the straw is needed, in addition to a larger diameter straw providing a better drinking experience.

It can be safely used outdoors. The low volume of waste from the pouch, along with a lighter weight compared to glass, also contributes to the benefits of the Pull Tab pouch.

Anti-litter 'leash' and more details

We asked for input from Sal Pellingra, ProAmpac’s vp of innovation and technology, about this highly unique, patent-pending pouch.

“There was a lot of development in the pull tab and straw hole,” he points out. “We can customize the size of the straw hole for different products. The thicker the product, the larger the straw hole in general.

“This is also is a more grown-up type pouch than one that would be stabbed with a straw—the target is higher value proposition than a kid’s juice pouch.  The easy-open pull tab provides more convenience and less frustration; tamper-evidence is built into the tab so it distorts upon opening. It also has a permanent adhesive portion at the end so the tab doesn’t become litter; it’s kind of a built-in litter leash.”

Pouches and other packaging can be found at WestPack, February 7-9, 2017, in Anaheim, CA. WestPack is part of an all-in-one megashow that also includes PLASTEC West; some 20,000 industry professionals are expected to attend.
